It is one of the most common questions we hear at Jaipur Eye & Dental Hospital: “If I get LASIK now, will it wear off in 10 or 15 years?”
Or perhaps you had LASIK in your 20s, and now in your 40s, you are finding yourself reaching for reading glasses. It is easy to assume your LASIK surgery has “failed” or worn off. But the medical reality is quite different.
The Short Answer: No, LASIK Does Not “Wear Off”
During LASIK surgery, an excimer laser permanently reshapes your cornea (the clear front surface of your eye) to correct your refractive error—whether that is myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism. Because this tissue is permanently removed, the physical changes made to your cornea will last for the rest of your life.
However, your eyes are living organs, and they continue to change as you age. While the cornea remains stable, other parts of your eye do not.
Why Is My Vision Blurry Years After LASIK?
If your vision is changing a decade or more after LASIK, it is rarely the cornea’s fault. Here are the two main culprits:
1. Presbyopia (The Over-40 Vision Change)
Around age 40 to 45, almost everyone develops a condition called presbyopia. This happens when the natural lens inside your eye loses its flexibility, making it difficult to focus on close objects like your phone or a menu. LASIK corrects distance vision on the cornea, but it cannot stop the natural aging of the lens inside your eye. If you need reading glasses in your 40s after having LASIK in your 20s, your LASIK didn’t fail—you are just experiencing normal presbyopia.
2. Cataracts
Later in life, usually in your 60s or older, the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This is a cataract. Everyone who lives long enough will eventually develop cataracts, regardless of whether they have had LASIK. The good news? You can absolutely have cataract surgery after LASIK. However, your eye surgeon will need to use specialized calculations to determine the correct power for your new intraocular lens (IOL). Always inform your cataract surgeon if you have had LASIK in the past!
Can My Original Prescription Come Back?
In a small percentage of cases, patients may experience what is known as “myopic regression.” This means a slight amount of nearsightedness returns over time. It is usually very minor compared to your original prescription. If this happens, and your cornea is thick enough, an enhancement procedure (a touch-up) can often restore your vision.
