What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually due to increased pressure inside the eye. It's often called the "silent thief of sight" because it typically has no early warning signs. Vision loss from glaucoma is permanent and cannot be reversed, making early detection and treatment crucial.

Why is Glaucoma Dangerous?

  • No symptoms in early stages
  • Vision loss is gradual and peripheral first
  • Once lost, vision cannot be restored
  • Can lead to complete blindness if untreated
  • Affects over 60 million people worldwide

Comprehensive Glaucoma Screening

Advanced tests for accurate diagnosis and monitoring

Tonometry

Measures intraocular pressure (IOP). Quick, painless test. Normal range: 10-21 mmHg.

Ophthalmoscopy

Direct examination of optic nerve. Checks for damage or abnormal cupping.

Visual Field Test

Perimetry test to detect peripheral vision loss. Essential for tracking progression.

OCT Scan

3D imaging of optic nerve and retinal layers. Most advanced diagnostic tool.

Gonioscopy

Examines drainage angle. Determines open-angle vs closed-angle glaucoma.

Pachymetry

Measures corneal thickness. Important for accurate pressure assessment.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

From eye drops to surgery - comprehensive management to preserve your vision

Medical Management

First-line treatment for most patients. Eye drops to lower pressure.

  • Prostaglandin analogs
  • Beta-blockers
  • Alpha agonists
  • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors
From ₹200-₹1,500/month

Surgical Treatment

For advanced glaucoma or when other treatments fail.

  • Trabeculectomy
  • Drainage implants
  • MIGS procedures
  • Long-term pressure control
₹30,000 - ₹60,000/eye

Types of Glaucoma

Open-Angle Glaucoma (Most Common - 90%)

The drainage angle remains open but the drainage canals become clogged over time. Pressure builds gradually. No symptoms until significant vision loss. Treated with eye drops, laser, or surgery.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma (Acute)

The drainage angle becomes suddenly blocked. Emergency situation! Symptoms: severe eye pain, headache, nausea, blurred vision, halos around lights. Requires immediate treatment with laser or surgery.

Normal-Tension Glaucoma

Optic nerve damage occurs despite normal eye pressure. Cause unclear - may be related to poor blood flow. Requires monitoring and treatment similar to regular glaucoma.

Congenital Glaucoma

Present from birth due to improper eye development. Signs: cloudy eyes, light sensitivity, excessive tearing. Requires early surgical treatment for best outcomes.

Secondary Glaucoma

Develops as complication of other conditions: eye injury, inflammation, diabetes, tumors, or steroid use. Treatment focuses on both the underlying cause and the glaucoma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can glaucoma be cured?

No, glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled. The goal of treatment is to stop further damage and preserve remaining vision. Lost vision cannot be restored. This is why early detection and consistent treatment are crucial.

How often should I get screened?

Annual screening is recommended for people over 60, or over 40 if you have risk factors (family history, diabetes, high myopia). If diagnosed with glaucoma, visits every 3-6 months to monitor progression.

Will I go blind from glaucoma?

Not necessarily! With early detection and proper treatment, most people with glaucoma maintain useful vision throughout their lives. However, untreated glaucoma does eventually lead to blindness. Compliance with treatment is key.

Are eye drops enough to control glaucoma?

For many patients, yes. Eye drops can effectively control eye pressure if used consistently as prescribed. However, some patients need laser treatment or surgery. Your doctor will determine the best approach based on your specific case.

Is glaucoma hereditary?

Yes, family history is a significant risk factor. If a parent or sibling has glaucoma, your risk is 4-9 times higher. If you have a family history, inform your eye doctor and get regular screenings starting at age 40.

Can lifestyle changes help prevent glaucoma?

While you can't prevent glaucoma, healthy habits may reduce risk: regular exercise (improves blood flow), maintain healthy weight, eat green leafy vegetables, wear eye protection during sports, control diabetes/hypertension. Most important: get regular eye exams.
